About WVRJ
The Western Virginia Regional Jail was built to alleviate the overcrowded and potentially unsafe conditions in the local jails of the four localities that formed the Western Virginia Regional Jail Authority in 2005. The local jails were operating at two to three times their rated capacities.

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), a federal law enacted in 2003, was created to eliminate sexual abuse in confinement. In addition to providing federal funding for research, programs, training, and technical assistance to address the issue, the legislation mandated the development of national standards. The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission developed recommended national standards for reducing prison rape.

VINE is an on-line resource that allows a crime victim to search for information regarding the current custody status of inmates serving sentences in Virginia local and regional jails and the Virginia Department of Corrections.

WVRJ Authority Board
The governing body of the Western Virginia Regional Jail is made up of representatives from the participating jurisdictions. Participating jurisdictions for Western Virginia Regional Jail are Roanoke County, Franklin County, Montgomery County, and the City of Salem.
